Mats, Carpets, and Cushions in Svalbard and New Zealand

  • The Fells 456 Route 103A Newbury, NH, 03255 (map)

Presenter David Charlton writes, “We took two 'holidays of a lifetime' within the space of 5 months.  [In the presentation, I will] compare and contrast the habitats in which similar plants grow at opposite ends of the globe and how that compares with the ways in which we try to cultivate them.”

David Charlton has been an active member of the Alpine Garden Society since 1986 and is currently Secretary and Show Secretary of its Derby Local Group.  He served for four years as a Trustee of the Society itself.  He is a regular exhibitor and judge at AGS Shows and has just been awarded a second bar to his Gold Medal.  He is a retired solicitor and escape from full time work gave him time to fulfil his enthusiasm for wildlife and the natural environment.  He is a past Vice-Chair of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.  For many years he has led mountain flower walks in the Dolomites, Pyrenees and Picos de Europa for a specialist mountain holiday company (Collett's).  He is co-author with Cliff Booker of two pocket field guides to the flowers of these wonderful mountains - Mountain Flowers - The Dolomites and - The Pyrenees and Picos.
