History Exhibit: Two Pens, One Name: The Dual Legacies of John Hay

This exhibit explores the captivating literary heritage of the Hay family and the enduring impact of their written works. At its center is John Milton Hay, the renowned statesman who was also an accomplished poet, novelist, editor, and historian. His writings reflect a life deeply intertwined with the cultural and political world of his era, enriched by close friendships with celebrated authors such as Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, and Henry James.

The story continues with his grandson, John Hay, who carried the family’s literary tradition into the 20th century. A co‑founder of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, he authored eighteen books, writing from his cabin at Brewster’s Dry Hill and his summer cottage at The Fells. His 1959 book The Run became a classic of American nature writing, capturing his profound connection to the natural world.

Two Pens, One Name offers a unique window into the creative achievements of these two influential writers, while also highlighting the contributions of other, lesser‑known members of the Hay family whose voices helped shape this remarkable lineage.

Ecology Exhibit: Gardening in Granite

Clarence Hay, Son of John Milton Hay

Drawing on Clarence Hay’s reflections in Gardening in Granite, this exhibit explores the ingenuity and perseverance required to garden in the rocky terrain of The Fells. Hay’s work highlights how stone—often seen as an obstacle—became a defining feature, shaping both the design and character of the landscape. Through historic images, text, and interpretive materials, visitors will discover how gardeners adapted to granite soils, transforming ledge, boulders, and walls into spaces of beauty and purpose.

The exhibit also looks forward. Today, the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) Fells Chapter, led by Nick Scheu, has begun the important work of reviving the historic rock garden. Their efforts honor the site’s legacy while continuing its evolution. Together, past and present reveal the uniqueness of The Fells property and the enduring relationship between landscape, stewardship, and creativity.

First Floor Art Gallery: Greenway Artists Collective

The Greenway Art Collective is a group of like-minded professional artists based in western New Hampshire who convene regularly to exchange ideas, explore opportunities, and support one another’s creative practice. Its members are seasoned exhibitors with an extensive history of participation in group and solo exhibitions, as well as art and craft fairs, throughout New England.

Working in a range of media - including oil, acrylic, ink, watercolor, and mixed media - the artists of the collective bring diverse styles and perspectives to their work. With a deep connection to the natural world, their work frequently captures the vistas, trees, flowers and wildlife of the region. For one artist, nature serves as a catalyst for abstract meditations on climate change.
