“New Hampshire's Literary Heritage”
New Hampshire’s landscape is a powerful writing muse. Some well-respected New Hampshire authors and poets include Cecelia Thaxter, Robert Frost, Grace Metalious, John Irving, Donald Hall, J.D. Salinger, and Jodi Picoult. Before the written word, Abenaki communicated through petroglyphs and oral tradition. New Hampshire-born Harriott E. Wilson was the first African-American woman to publish a novel in the US. New Hampshire has produced more than its share of US poet laureates and controversial banned books. Other literary firsts in NH include establishing the first free library and establishing two of the oldest writer and artist colonies in the United States.
Dr. Mary Kronenwetter is the author of the New Hampshire-based historical fiction, Pauper Auction.
