John Hay: The Prophet, The Poet and The Environmentalist A Presentation by Dr. Patricia Martin

  • John Hay Estate at The Fells 456 Rt 103A / PO Box 276 Newbury, NH 03255 United States (map)

This presentation will introduce you to John Hay, the grandson of John Milton Hay. Dr. Martin will explore John Hay as a young man growing up summering at The Fells, his time at prep school and as a college student, and then as a writer of nonfiction living in Brewster, Massachusetts and Bremen, Maine with his children and wife, Kristi Aresvik Putnam. A man of distinction and literary honors, John Hay explored the diversity of writing for Yank newspaper during WW II, and then onto mentorship under Conrad Aiken, and then into environmental nature writing. John Hay has been described by Annie Dillard as the nature writer for nature writers. She described him as “one of the world’s handful of very great nature writers.”  His 16 books will be addressed during this presentation.  Also, his life at Cape Cod will be highlighted. Come learn more about this very interesting man, who has been titled “The Prophet of Dry Hill,” by author David Gessner.
