In early 1860, Abraham Lincoln was invited to speak at Cooper Union in New York City and decided to extend his trip with a visit to his eldest son, Bob, then a student at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. The unexpected success of his address at Cooper Institute transformed what had been a modest journey into what many consider the true beginning of his Presidential campaign.
Over the next twelve days, Lincoln delivered thirteen speeches across four states before returning home to Illinois, expecting simply to resume his thriving law practice. His surprise nomination and subsequent election to the Presidency soon altered the course of his life—and the nation’s. Lincoln presenter Steve Wood will portray our 16th President as he reflects on this pivotal moment in his life.
A Historical presenter specializing in 19th century American history, Steve Wood has been researching and portraying Abe Lincoln since 1995. He is a member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, the League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling, and the NH Storytelling Alliance. Steve is a graduate of the University of Maine, School of Forestry, and worked for nearly thirty years with the UNH Cooperative Extension as an Extension Educator in Forest Resources, retiring at the end of 2003.
