John Hay Estate Summer Speaker Series: John Hay’s State Department ~Nicole Phelps

Nicole Phelps is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Vermont.  Her intellectual interests focus on Europe and the United States from the 1860s through the 1920s and specialize in the history of the State Department and the evolution and importance of the social and ceremonial aspects of diplomacy.  She is the author of U.S.-Habsburg Relations from 1815 to the Paris Peace Conference, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2013 (paperback 2015).  Her current research project is on the US Consular Service, one of the long nineteenth century’s precursors to the US Foreign Service, which she terms “John Hay’s State Department.”  Meets at the Pavilion.
